Ok so we went to meet with a Dave Ramsey ELP (endorsed local provider). A financial adviser that knows Dave Ramsey's principles. Jorge set up the appointment because he wanted to know more about investments and that sort. We talked about projected retirement savings goals and college savings goals. And those of you that don't know Dave Ramsey - part of the vision is that if you are debt free (think about it, no car payments, not credit card payments, etc) then you will have money available to invest and invested correctly with compound interested you have the potential to retire a millionaire. So we wanted to firgure out how much we needed to invest (I know its 15%) but I wanted to know HOW do you invest? Who do I pay??
So he kept saying Dave Ramsey's principle is . . . . then we'd talk about our income now and what we hope it to be with promotions etc. He would say things like "that would be an ok salary for you guys, I couldn't live off it, and then you get more money and you want a bigger house, or the wife wants more expensive clothes" and we'd say "yeah, but if we're debt free we can do it". He always seemed like he didn't beleive it could be done. He never said it but the feeling was there. Then he'd say stuff like "even if you do have a million when you retire with inflation and all it will only be like haveing five hundred thousand". True maybe, but still. Then he'd say, but Dave Ramsey suggests . . .
Now I know that many of you are skeptical that retireing a millionaire is possible especially for someone like us (no college). And that's ok. you haven't had your life's view on money and debt changed yet. But I just didn't like him not believing it. I thought if you are endorsing Dave Ramsey you should practice it yourself (i never asked, but i highly doubt he does) and believe that the principles are true and if followed correctly will yeild results. Why endorse it if you don't think its true. Or at least encourage people that they can do it.
When we left he said "Ok, I look forward to helping you guys become millionaires" but his tone was sort of mocking. My thoughts were, I don't know if I want to invest my money with someone who doesn't believe I have potential. But Jorge was just the opposite he said, (to me) "you wait, I'll prove you wrong, we'll get there and you'll see". So who knows.
He was a nice guy, but not believable. I think my brother should become an ELP even though he's not totally debt free yet, but at least he believes what he's talking about.
It really made me think about things I talk about. Does my life and my actions reflect my words. Especially in kids ministry. Do I practice what I preach? I believe that for the most part I do. I hope that I never leave people feeling like "she said the right things, but she doesn't even believe it or do it"
1 Timothy 4:12
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
May the Lord helps us to truly be examples.

it is possible, najeras! you will do it, i have no doubt. and when we're millionaires together will go on a cruise for thanksgiving with all our family: grandkids and all!
did you go to eldon monson?? i've only talked to him briefly on the phone; mainly because he wanted to send me materials to give out to fpu class. but if that's how he's gonna be, i don't think so. (did it cost you anything just to meet with him?? just curious.)
you can download a pdf file of what dave thinks here.
oh, and if you don't feel right about eldon, then go to someone else. it's your money. jorge can still "prove it" to him when you are millionaires by going back later. and if you decide not to go with him then he will have missed out on any fees he would have gotten helping you get there. ;-)
yes it was eldon monson. we didn't pay anything to meet with him. he says he doesn't charge us to invest with him, the "place" where we put our money charges a fee and he gets a cut from that fee.
Take it from me, baby ... invest early and often and you'll be swimming in money someday. You're doing the right thing and it will pay off big-time. You're smart as a bag of whips to want to get out of debt, and I know you'll join the millionaire's club. Great job and keep going, baby! www.debtective.com
